Breaking News: Trellis becomes a nonprofit
by The Trellis Occasional Staff
In February of 2026, Trellis officially became a nonprofit organization, realizing a longtime dream for the Trellis founders.
This has been a long process. Starting last May, Kim Staley, Trellis Director of Business Operations, filed the paperwork with the state.
“We wanted to be a non-profit from the start,” Staley said.
So, what does this mean for the Trellis community?
“Not much will change for students,” said Trellis director Amanda Montoya.
However, there will be some changes for the community, including a hope for increased accessibility.
“Hearing that people could not afford [Trellis] was rough,” Montoya said, “So that was one of the biggest reasons we wanted to become a nonprofit.”
The directors hope to make scholarships available to families in need in the future.
Becoming a nonprofit means that Trellis could become eligible for certain grants. This means different businesses could work with Trellis and donate things like technology or ingredients for baking class.
There were many steps to becoming a nonprofit. It involved forming a board, getting a nonprofit lawyer, and lots of paperwork.
The future of our school is brighter than ever thanks to this big step.
