SB 414 was written by Senator Ashby on February 14, 2025. On September 13, 2025 SB 414 was passed by the California State Senate.
The Assembly voting was 55 for the Bill, and 3 against. For the Senate it was unanimous. After this it was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, officially passing it.
There has been much debate between AB 84 and SB 414. Recently, AB 84 has been shelved, as there was strong opposition and the bill failed to get enough support. Next year, 2026, it will be revisited.
Both of the bills' purposes were to increase oversight and accountability in charter schools, specifically regarding matters of public funds.
David Patterson said the bill was a “solid start” Many other people agree with this, though there are a few opposing, like David Goldberg of the CTA said “the bill fails to address problems and weakens existing rules” which means that AB 84, which causes a potential problem for charter schools, could still come into effect.
