The History of Halloween
The history of Halloween goes all the way back to the ancient Celtic harvest festival of Samhain. The Celtics believed the veil between the living and the dead became thinner on this night, which led to them wearing costumes to scare off spirits. These traditions eventually became the Christian holiday All Hallows’ Eve. The day after All Hallows’ Eve was known as All Saints’ Day.
Today, Halloween is celebrated throughout the United States, and the tradition of wearing costumes began with the Celtic tradition of wearing costumes to scare off spirits. One reason why pumpkins are often used to represent Halloween is because they ripen around that season. Other countries have similar celebrations held around Halloween, such as Día De Los Muertos (Day Of The Dead) in Mexico.
