Last Minute DIY Halloween Costumes!
by the staff of The Trrrellis Occassional
Scrambling for a halloween costume last minute? It happens. Here is a detailed list of creative and simple costumes to put together at the last minute.
Ghost
For this costume, all you need is a simple white sheet with eyes! We also recommend a mouth for eating candy. Although many people regularly wear this costume on Halloween, you can add your own twist to it. Maybe add a pair of snazzy sunglasses or a fun top hat! Want to be a cat ghost? Go for it! You can be any type of ghost you want! And for the Peanuts fans out there, you can always go Charlie Brown style with lots of holes cut out around the sheet.
Cereal Killer
All you really need for this costume is some clothes that you are done with, fake blood, and mini cereal boxes. Simply glue the mini cereal boxes to your clothing and add some blood to everything. Add a knife or other toy weapon to complete this punny look.
To make fake blood, you can either do 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup with 1 cup corn syrup and add red food coloring for a more drippy effect; or do ⅔ cup chocolate syrup with ⅓ laundry detergent and add red food coloring for clothes.
Boba
Find a dress, or a shirt in a single color, like pastel green, (matcha) beige, (milk tea) pink, (strawberry) or anything else you think would be cute! Glue on or safety pin some black pom poms, or buttons, for the boba. Use a headband and attach a rolled-up piece of paper for a straw!
Jellyfish
First things first: get an umbrella! Then find some streamers or strips of fabric and glue them on; if you don't want to ruin an umbrella just use some safety pins. That's really it! Optionally you can also glue on lights, sequins, and even make or find a matching dress!
Rainbow M&M’s
This costume is great if you're going with a group of friends! All you need to do is get clothes in a single color and draw a big “M” with a white fabric marker on the front of your shirt. This also works great with Skittles (draw an “S” instead of an “M”).
A Brief History of Halloween
The history of Halloween goes all the way back to the ancient Celtic harvest festival of Samhain. The Celtics believed the veil between the living and the dead became thinner on this night, which led to them wearing costumes to scare off spirits. These traditions eventually became the Christian holiday All Hallows’ Eve. The day after All Hallows’ Eve was known as All Saints’ Day.
Today, Halloween is celebrated throughout the United States, and the tradition of wearing costumes began with the Celtic tradition of wearing costumes to scare off spirits. One reason why pumpkins are often used to represent Halloween is because they ripen around that season. Other countries have similar celebrations held around Halloween, such as Día De Los Muertos (Day Of The Dead) in Mexico.
